Winter is a time for evaluating how your roses performed this year. Time to replace some disappointing roses next season. Time to get cozy and review the available rose catalogs and online companies. Look up Witherspoon Rose Culture, Edmund’s Roses, Certified Roses, Heirloom Roses, David Austin Roses, and Antique Rose Emporium, who are some popular rose sellers.
Deep freezes have set in, time to mound up soil and mulches around your more cold tender roses. White, yellow and apricot roses are the most cold susceptible types. You can make a chicken wire cage around each rose and cover with shredded leaves, or shredded mulch, for example.
If there is no rain in many weeks, be sure to water your roses, especially those in containers, before temperatures drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Wet soils freeze more slowly than dry soil does.
